Article: Hydrogen-Rich Water Bathing in Adults with Skin Conditions

Hydrogen-Rich Water Bathing in Adults with Skin Conditions

In this study, the authors reported numerical changes in scoring systems after hydrogen-rich water bathing, compared with baseline values, in participants with psoriasis or atopic dermatitis.

Study Summary

This open-label, non-randomized trial included two participant groups:

  • 41 adults with psoriasis vulgaris
  • 48 adults with atopic dermatitis

Participants bathed in hydrogen-rich water for 10–20 minutes per session, twice weekly for 8 weeks. Researchers recorded changes in validated dermatology scoring systems at baseline and at the end of the study.

Results

Psoriasis group (n = 41):

PASI score (baseline vs week 8):

Baseline: 13.5

Week 8: 5.7

Difference: −7.8

Percentage reduction: ~57.8%
(p < 0.001)

DLQI score (baseline vs week 8):

Baseline: 10.3

Week 8: 5.6

Difference: −4.7

Percentage reduction: ~45.6%
 (p < 0.001)

Atopic dermatitis group (n = 48):

SCORAD score (baseline vs week 8):

Baseline: 48.2

Week 8: 23.5

Difference: −24.7

Percentage reduction: ~51.2%
(p < 0.001)

EASI score (baseline vs week 8):

Baseline: 14.1

Week 8: 5.4

Difference: −8.7

Percentage reduction: ~61.7%
(p < 0.001)

The authors reported that these numerical differences were statistically significant across the scoring systems measured.

Why They Measured These Markers

Researchers use PASI, DLQI, SCORAD and EASI scores to document visible characteristics and self-reported factors related to skin condition patterns, including surface appearance, dryness, redness and affected area. These values can shift due to bathing routines, hydration, environmental variables and other individual factors. In this trial, the reported changes reflect measurements recorded within the scoring frameworks used by the authors.
